Items classified as "Chinese Export" are pieces manufactured in China specifically for sale to Europe and the Americas during the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries. These pieces typically are a blend of contemporary Chinese decorative motifs of the given time period with popular design motifs and standards from Europe. The resulting pieces are an interesting hybrid and give us insight into the ways in which Chinese artisans and merchants were willing to adapt so as to build a stronger economy based on foreign trade.

The earliest pieces generally seen in the Export Arts were made during the Qianlong Dynasty, circa 1750. We have a range of Chinese Export pieces available through our gallery including those made in porcelain, lacquer, silver and ivory.

Silver Pouring Vessel

This Chinese Export pot is unusual in its form, though it serves a very functional purpose. The pot features two inner chambers and the centermost one is spouted. It's possible that it may have been used for liquor or wine of some sort that would have been placed in the center chamber and hot or cold water may have been poured into the outer chamber so as to warm or cool the contents of the inner. The exterior body is decorated with quatrefoil-shaped reserves decorated with deeply etched floral and animal motifs. A reserve with two bats around a geometric symbol is repeated a few times around the exterior body. This piece measures 4.25 inches height with the handle fully extended.
