The art of coral carving in China originated sometime during the 18th century, though most of the pieces that survive today were crafted during the latter half of the 19th century. Red coral naturally grows in the seas around Japan, where the majority of the material was harvested from. As with other Chinese hardstone carvings, it is evident that a strong focus has been paid to the utilization of the material's natural textural properties through careful design so as to enhance the visual appeal of the finished piece.
