The art of coral carving in China originated sometime during the 18th century, though most of the pieces that survive today were crafted during the latter half of the 19th century. Red coral naturally grows in the seas around Japan, where the majority of the material was harvested from. As with other Chinese hardstone carvings, it is evident that a strong focus has been paid to the utilization of the material's natural textural properties through careful design so as to enhance the visual appeal of the finished piece. Female Figure with Roses

The subject of this fine coral carving is of a young maiden standing amidst a cluster of roses; a diaphanous veil drapes most of her body though her shoulders, one of her arms and her left breast are bare. The piece is carved from a fine piece of pink coral that is interlaced with coral of "angelskin" coloration. The figure modeling in this piece is truly excellent, the body's proportions and forms are very naturalistic and advanced for the time period in which this piece was made. The sculpture itself measures 6 3/8 inches height.

Floating Deity

This beautiful sculpture was carved from a solid piece of brilliant red coral. The subject is a floating deity. Only the deity's head, torso and arms are carved. The partial body seems to emerge from trails of drapery and clouds carved roughly from the natural branches of the coral itself. The deity is modeled wearing an elaborate necklace, bracelets and traditional hairpiece. The piece is accompanied by a finely carved wooden stand. The coral sculpture measures a total 6.75 inches length.
